Building the Bridge
The world’s most recognizable structure and one of the most photographed things on the planet began to take shape over the bay of San Francisco in 1933 and the first car drove across the bridge was exactly after four years in 1937. Despite the name, the gigantic structure has always painted orange vermilion, conveyed as “International Orange”. The architect Irving Morrow rejected the black and steel grey and selected the distinctive orange colour. Not only to enhance the visibility for the passing ships but to blend well with the land and easily perceivable from the blues and grey of the sky and land.
Joseph Strauss, the man behind the masterpiece of workmanship is remembered as the main designer and engineer. The construction began on January 5th, 1933. Approximately $35 million dollars was invested with ten prime contractors. Strauss kept a close eye on the day-to-day construction and the bridge finally completed on May 27th, 1937. After the completion, opening day was deemed as pedestrian day and approximately 15000 people an hour crossed the remarkable monument, each paid 25 cents for the privilege to cross the bridge.
